CREA was founded in 2005 by Dr. Michael Roy, a conservation biologist. In 2006 he saved the area that was to become Cocobolo Nature Reserve from destruction by cattle ranching activities. CNR now extends over 1100 acres (410 ha) in the Mamoni Valley.  CREA has a board of directors that is composed of:
